I’ve successfully completed 18 months in College Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management Programme and I am very lucky to obtained an internship arrangement with Shangri-La Hotel Singapore. During the first week of my internship, I went through an intensive training programme provided by the hotel whereby I was equipped with essential product knowledge, food hygiene process, customer service and communication skills. I strongly believe that this great experience together with all the knowledge and skills which I have learned from the College will prepare me for further career advancements in hospitality industry after graduating.

I just finished studying Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management with SHRM and I am going for an internhsip for 6 months at The Regent Singapore Hotel. We learnt a lot from front line services to back end services, F&B, housekeeping, cooking, drink-mixing. At SHRM, we learnt a lot in practical classes. Most importantly, we had to execute an event for 70 to 80 guests doing everything from scratch; like budgeting, planning, marketing, selling tickets, cooking food, prepraring drinks.

I am from Myanmar and I enjoyed my studies at SHRM College. This postgraduate diploma course allows me to study a lot of international case studies and sharpen my research and conceptual thinking skills. During the lessons, the lecturers shared their industrial experience and made the lessons much more easier to understand. Before joining this course, I was weak in accounting but the lecturer was very patient and made sure I understood and coped with necessary accounting practices used in industries. This is my very first time studying overseas and I really feel like its home when I was studying in SHRM College. During my studies, I never felt alone because I was always welcomed and cared by my lecturers, classmates and staff from SHRM College. We had a great time in doing group projects as well as participating in school events and activities. It’s the college practice to “Study Hard! Play Hard! ”. The postgraduate diploma courses also helped me to acquire great management knowledge in finance, economics, marketing and IT areas. Right after completing my postgraduate diploma, I was very happy to be able to secure a full time job in Singapore and would like to thank my lecturers, classmates and academic staff from SHRM College.

It was my second time experience to study overseas. I really like Singapore because it is safe and beautiful. I was warmly welcomed by the SHRM family when I started my learning journey in Singapore. Of my many friends who came to Singapore to study, only SHRM College provides us with real hands-on hospitality experience. Practical restaurant service is held thrice a week to let us practice serving real customers and learning on the job. We are provided feedback immediately to help us improve. SHRM’s training reataurant and bar are very similar to real shops, so it can help us get familiar with the F&B area in restaurants and hotels. SHRM’s hospitality programme is really different from other schools!

Singapore celebrated her 50^th birthday and I was very honoured to be part of the parade! SHRM College is the only private school that participated by sending volunteers to usher, and we went through many training sessions on crowd management and welcoming guests. After that, I also received a certificate from the Singapore government, which is a very unique award! In addition, I also received training from the Singapore Civil Defence Force to do basic first-aid and emergency evacuation. This skill is very useful especially when I work in the hospitality industry after graduating!

Before ADHM students graduate, we have to execute the Student Event Project, which is a big-scale event that tests us on all skills we picked up over the two years. I had two main roles, to be the host and oversee the finances. As the host, I co-ordinated between food servers and guests, which taught me invaluable people management skills. When overseeing the finances, I had to balance our costing and tickets revenue and ensure that the project is profitable. It was not an easy project, but with enough coaching from our lecturers and support from fellow SHRM students, we managed to execute a successful event!

My internship with Holiday Inn was very good and I am so grateful for this opportunity. SHRM’s Industry Liaison Department discussed with Holiday Inn for job rotations, and so I started with the Atrium Restaurant, before trying out at the Xin Cuisine Chinese Restaurant. At the Atrium Restaurant, my manager let me try different roles. I thank SHRM for helping us practise being the Captain at the training restaurant, so that I was confident when assigned the different roles at Holiday Inn. I was also sent for supervisor training and with this Craft Training Certificate, I could train other Holiday Inn staff. Overall, my manager was very happy with my performance and awarded me a Certificate of Outstanding Performance. Thank you SHRM for teaching me excellent hospitality management skills and helping me score this internship!

I study in the business programme and there is this module that requires us to look at case studies. It helped us understand the logistics and marketing concepts we learned in class, and we could see how the theories worked in real life. My lecturers are also very good in explanation, such that we could quickly understand difficult concepts!

Before applying, they conducted a mock interview to let me practise my answering skills, so that when I went for the actual interview, I was very confident in answering those questions.
